Over the last two months or so I’ve been busy growing the WorkBook Project. WBP is a project that is inspired by the opensource software movement. I’ve written about the inspiration and the model that we’ve been developing around it – read here. But we crossed into a new area for WBP back in Feb. I’ve always had a goal for the project that it would move beyond information / resources and into actual opportunities for the creative community. WBP struck a deal with Babelgum to produce a web series about storytelling and creativity. The series is called RADAR and we are just now shooting the 12th and final episode of season one. What’s exciting about the series is that its developed and produced by WBP LABS, funded by Babelgum and owned by the WBP community. The production and post is facilitated by the WBP global community. When I have more time I’ll detail the unique deal that we struck but for now make sure to check out the episodes which are airing on Babelgum – for full details on the series visit http://radar.workbookproject.com
Other exciting things happening around WBP include a new round of our successful roving conference series for creators – DIY DAYS. In 2008, DIY DAYS traveled to LA, SF, Boston, NYC and London. This year DIY DAYS expands to more cities and also crosses over into different creative disciplines such as Music, Game design, Software development in addition to film. At the core of the conference is the exploration of ways that work can be funded, created, distributed and how creators can sustain from their efforts. Upcoming stops on the DIY DAYS 2009 tour are still be finalized but everything kicks off in Philadelphia on August 1st.
Speaking and more Speaking:
I’m going to be hitting the road again next week.
First up, is a trip to SF for a BAVC conference around creative producing. I’ll be participating on a panel about transmedia / cross-media storytelling. The focus is to help producers expand beyond film and experiment with new ways to extend the stories that they are telling.
Then in June there are stops at:
June 16th – The Game Education Summit at Carnegie Mellon University. I’ll be giving a presentation about open creativity and the evolution of audience from passive to active collaborators.
June 19th and 20th – I’ll be stopping off at the Open Video Conference at NYU’s Law School. Ted Hope and I will be doing a fireside chat about the evolution of storytelling.
June 22nd to 26th I’ll be at the Edinburgh International Film Festival where I’ll be speaking about cross-media and how it hold opportunities for new forms of storytelling and business models.
TV, FILM and beyond
HEAD TRAUMA continues to air on Showtime and we’ve been fielding some international interest for the film.
In terms of new projects – HiM is currently in development. I’m very excited about the project and we are finalizing the game and series bible along with a 4th draft of the film script.
In addition to HiM I’m also developing a TV series / transmedia project. All I can say at this point is that it’s a scripted series and we have an amazing team of people behind it.
NEW BLOG
I’ve started yet another blog. This one’s been baking for a number of months and I’m finally pulling it out of the oven. Text of Light named after the 1974 Stan Brakhage film is a place for me to let loose and share some of the random things that I <3. It’s a combination of music, film, tech and theories. www.textoflight.com
